If they have a disability, or care for someone who does, this could change everything.
Most people have absolutely no idea this program exists. And that breaks my heart, because I know firsthand what a difference it makes.
Our Story
Maya was born with two rare diseases, Cystic Fibrosis and pulmonary atresia, at a time when the projected life expectancy for CF patients was roughly 30 years.
What followed were years of hospitalizations, insurance battles, and moments where the treatment we needed simply didn’t exist in the United States. Multiple times, we traveled internationally to access therapies that kept Maya alive long enough for science to catch up. When Trikafta arrived, it changed everything, and may now give her a normal lifespan.
Maya is 25 years old today. Thriving. Full lung function. For a Cystic Fibrosis patient, that is nothing short of a miracle.
But here’s something I don’t always talk about when I share our story: through all of it, the hospitalizations, the international trips, the insurance battles, the uncertainty, having a home that we owned made everything easier.
A stable, predictable home was the foundation that held our family together when everything else felt like it was shifting beneath us. It was where Maya could recover in peace. Where we could make accessibility modifications without asking permission. Where we didn’t have to fear a landlord selling the property or raising our rent in the middle of a medical crisis.
It was our anchor.
I know what it feels like to be so focused on surviving day to day that saving for a home feels completely out of reach. So much time, energy, emotion, and money go into managing a medical journey that the idea of a down payment can feel almost laughable.
That’s exactly why I want every family in that situation to know: there is help available.
Colorado’s $25,000 Homeownership Grant
Through a special Colorado homeownership program and lender partner Kristina Fisher, qualified buyers with a disability, or those caring for someone with a disability, may be eligible for:
- A $25,000 grant toward homeownership
- Lower interest rate loan options
- Down payment assistance programs
- More affordable pathways to owning a home
The hardest part for most families isn’t the monthly mortgage payment. It’s getting over the hurdle of the down payment while managing caregiving, therapies, medical costs, and their own health challenges. This program is designed to close exactly that gap.
Because a stable home means so much more than just four walls:
- A peaceful place to heal and recover
- Room for accessibility modifications
- Consistency for medical care and schools
- Protection from rising rents
- Less stress and housing insecurity
- Stability for children emotionally and academically
- A safer, more predictable future
Everyone deserves a safe nest of their own.
