There is no known cause. Lupus may be caused by a virus or a “cluster of viral influences.”

Environmental causes are a possibility. Researchers are looking carefully at patients’ medical history, and also are seeking genetic, environmental and viral causes. So far, the cause or causes remain undiscovered.
