Voices That Move Change: A Powerful Step Forward for Kidney Health

Six Individuals together looking at the camera

Some moments remind us exactly why we do this work.

This week was one of them.

Lupus Colorado stood alongside an extraordinary group of advocates, Jessie, Lance, and Amber, who showed up with courage, honesty, and determination to support a bill that would require insurance coverage for kidney screening.

They didn’t just testify. They made it real.

And because of that collective strength, the bill passed out of committee, bringing us one step closer to a future where early detection is accessible, expected, and life-changing.

Why This Matters So Much

For those living with lupus, the risk of lupus nephritis is not abstract, it’s deeply personal. Up to 60% of individuals will develop kidney involvement, and for children, that number is even higher.

What makes this especially challenging is how quietly it can begin. Kidney damage often develops without warning, without pain, without clear signs, until it becomes something much harder to manage.

But there is hope in early detection.

Simple, routine screenings can catch changes early, opening the door to timely treatment and better outcomes. This bill is about making sure those screenings aren’t a privilege, but a standard.

Turning Stories Into Impact

Walking into a hearing room and sharing your story takes bravery. It means being vulnerable in front of strangers. It means trusting that your voice can make a difference.

Jessie, Lance, and Amber did exactly that.

They spoke not just about symptoms, but about real life, about navigating uncertainty, managing care, and advocating for themselves in moments when it would be easier to stay silent.

Their stories brought clarity. Their presence brought urgency. And their voices helped decision-makers see beyond policy and into the lived experience of lupus.

That is how change happens.

A Community That Shows Up

This moment didn’t happen in isolation. It was built by a community that continues to show up, for one another, and for something bigger.

Together, we were able to elevate real patient voices in a meaningful way and shine a light on the importance of early detection and prevention

And together, we helped move this bill forward.

Leadership That Lifts Communities

We are also incredibly grateful for the leadership behind this effort, especially Representative Leider, whose commitment to patients continues to shine through in moments like this.

Rep. Leider has been a true champion for the lupus community, working to ensure that policies reflect the real needs of the people they are meant to serve. Her leadership on this bill reflects both compassion and action, an unwavering dedication to improving lives through thoughtful, patient-centered policy.

Last year, we had the honor of recognizing her at the Lupus Colorado Walk with a community award, celebrating her partnership and advocacy. This week was a powerful reminder of exactly why that recognition was so well deserved.

This Is What Progress Looks Like

The bill’s passage out of committee is more than a milestone, it’s momentum.

It’s proof that when this community speaks, people listen.

There is still work ahead, but this moment matters. It represents progress. It reflects possibility. And it reminds us that change is not only needed, it’s happening.

To Jessie, Lance, and Amber, your willingness to stand up and share your stories is already making a difference for thousands of people across Colorado.

And to everyone in this community: your voice matters here. Whether you share your story, support someone you love, or stay engaged in the work, you are part of this movement.

Together, we are building a future where people living with lupus are seen, supported, and empowered every step of the way.

And this week, we took a powerful step forward.
